Exchange University: Yonsei University, South Korea

Exchange Period: Winter 2022

My winter exchange at Yonsei University in South Korea was an incredibly enriching and transformative experience that extended far beyond my initial expectations. It marked a significant milestone in my personal growth, as it was the longest period I had ever been away from my family. Throughout this exchange, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in a vibrant and dynamic culture, forge deep connections with both old and new friends, and overcome various challenges, ultimately shaping me into a more independent and resilient individual.

Embarking on this journey with a group of friends only amplified the joy and excitement of exploration. From the moment we arrived, it was evident that we shared a special bond, and our camaraderie quickly became the foundation for unforgettable adventures. Together, we embarked on thrilling expeditions, delving into the heart of South Korea's bustling cities, serene countryside, and breathtaking natural landscapes. We marveled at ancient temples, indulged in traditional cuisine, and navigated bustling markets with a shared sense of curiosity and wonder.

But it wasn't just about the sightseeing and tourist attractions. Our group's dynamics extended far beyond the realm of mere travel companions. We seamlessly integrated ourselves into the local community, forging connections with fellow students and residents alike. Language barriers proved to be a minor hurdle, as we discovered the power of non-verbal communication, gestures, and the genuine warmth of the Korean people. We relied on one another for support, whether it was deciphering maps adorned with Korean characters or pooling our resources to manage the group's finances effectively.

Living together in a shared hostel, we quickly adapted to the responsibilities of maintaining a harmonious living space. Cleaning, cooking, and washing became collaborative endeavors, as we learned to accommodate each other's preferences and foster a sense of unity. Our evenings were filled with laughter and joy, as we took turns inviting one another to our respective homes for dinners and games, creating cherished memories that would last a lifetime.

One of the most valuable lessons I learned during this exchange was the art of making decisions efficiently. With a diverse group of individuals, each with their own preferences and ideas, we had to quickly find common ground and make choices that maximized our time and experiences. This agility allowed us to venture into uncharted territory, try new activities, and embrace novel experiences that we may have otherwise missed out on. It taught us the importance of compromise, adaptability, and open-mindedness, qualities that extend far beyond the confines of our exchange program.

Reflecting on my time in South Korea, I wholeheartedly recommend every student to seize the opportunity to participate in an overseas exchange program. Not only does it provide the chance to travel while studying, but it also offers a unique perspective on life in a different country. It encourages personal growth, broadens horizons, and fosters a deep appreciation for cultural diversity. The bonds forged and the lessons learned during my exchange have left an indelible mark on my life, equipping me with invaluable skills and memories that I will carry with me throughout my academic and personal journey.
