So You Want To Be A Board Director? — An Evening of Insights with NUSBSA x SID

What does it really take to serve as a Board Director — whether in a commercial organisation, social enterprise, or non-profit institution?

That was the central question explored at our recent event, “So You Want To Be A Board Director?”, jointly organised by the NUS Business School Alumni Association (NUSBSA) and the Singapore Institute of Directors (SID). The evening brought together alumni and members keen to understand the pathways, responsibilities, and realities of board service.

Our distinguished panel — Ms Su-Yen Wong, FSID, CSP, Ms Kay Pang, Mr Terence Quek, and Mr Steven Yeo — moderated by Mr Thompson Wong, shared candid insights from their collective experience serving on various boards across the private and social sectors.

The discussion delved deep into what makes a capable and trusted board member — from understanding governance and fiduciary duties to exercising sound judgment and stewardship in times of uncertainty. Panelists also shared their personal journeys and reflections, offering both inspiration and a dose of realism for those aspiring to take up board roles.

For many in the audience, the session provided both a valuable guide and a timely check — reminding future directors that while board appointments can be deeply rewarding, they also come with significant responsibility, preparation, and commitment.

The NUSBSA is proud to collaborate with SID in bringing such meaningful conversations to our alumni community. By connecting experienced leaders with aspiring directors, we continue to nurture a network of professionals who lead with purpose, integrity, and a sense of service — in business and beyond.

A heartfelt thank-you to Ms Su-Yen Wong, Ms Kay Pang, Mr Terence Quek, and Mr Steven Yeo for sharing their insights, and to Mr Thompson Wong for skillfully moderating the panel. And of course, thank you to all our alumni and SID members who joined us for this thoughtful and engaging evening.
